It has been a long wait but one of the most anticipated comics this year has finally arrived on store shelves. Shattered Empire is the new Marvel comic series which details events after the critical Battle of Endor. Our fight begins in the cockpit of A-Wing, where our hero and Rebel pilot, Shara Bey is fighting for her life above the forest moon of Endor. Soon after striking a Star Destroyer, her Green Team gets the word that the shields have been lowered and that Red and Gold groups are going in to conduct a critical strike on the Emporer fully operational battlestation. While defending the perimeter, her group targets a Tydirium Shuttle leaving the Death Star. She moves to engage only to find that the signal beacon from the craft is squawking a Rebel code. She requests identification and acknowledgement and she soon hears the voice of Commander Skywalker who is now headed for the Forrest moon. She quickly dispatches two TIE’s in defense of the Tydirium Shuttle and begins to head back to her Rebel Capital ship.
Soon after the destruction of the Death Star 2, her companions celebrate on board the Rebel Capital ship. She asks permission to go to the moon surface from her Superior where celebrations have already begun. She is desperate to find out if her Husband, Kes, part of the Elite Rebel Pathfinder Squad is alive. Shattered Empire then takes a wonderful stroll through the celebration on the Forest moon of Endor where we see our heroes alive and speaking once more. This Author has to admit, after reading all the books released this past week from Aftermath to Lost Stars and everything in between, to see Han argue with Lando about the Falcon’s radar dish, just plain hit me in the feels. This is what I have been missing and Shattered Empire filled it.
It’s not long when our hero Shara finds her husband….Sergeant Kes Dameron. Yes, you read that right. Looks like the best pilot in the galaxy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is no other than the offspring of Kes and Shara Dameron. Boy is it nice to finally have confirmation on parents. They both hook up obviously and join the revelry only to find more work needs to be done come morning.
Han informs his group on Endor, in their hung over state that there is work to do. There is a contingent of Empire forces on the other side of the moon that need to be destroyed. The leadership of the Rebellion refuses to leave the Ewoks, after there commitment and sacrifice in the fight, to deal with more Imperials down the road. The Rebels than plan a ground attack on the facility. During the fight Kes Dameron talks with his wife about plans now that the war looks to be coming to a close. He talks about finding a planet and building a home. Something Shara is quick to point out is not exactly great timing, while she is shooting at bucket heads. The fight is engrossing and the artwork amazing. The Rebels win out the battle and our story ends with a grim face of Han Solo after going through enemy intel. There are moves in play by the Imperials and this war is not over.
The art in Shattered Empire is incredible and expected from the amazing artist Marco Checchetto. The dialogue is straight to the point and the action feels like you have been thrust right back into the Battle of Endor. I really liked this comic and I believe this four part series is something you should subscribe to. Shattered Empire is on store shelves or can be picked up at your favorite online retailer.
You have to love good Star Wars.
