It’s that time of year again when EW’s Anthony Breznican comes out of hyperspace and orders an orbital bombardment of Star Wars goodness. There standing on the bridge of the Super Star Destroyer “The Fourth Estate” with his hair tussled in the wind and a smile spread across his face, he begins his multi-day, multi story coverage that will knock us all flat. I love this spread; now it’s third for the Star Wars franchise that included coverage for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rogue One and now The Last Jedi.

Today shot off with a bang with a plethora of images, many of which we have seen before in some fashion. There were some new one’s in the bunch, including the “Caretakers” of Ahch-to, and that incredible photo of Chewie and the Porg. But what made today’s stories from Anthony fantastic, was his insight and interviews. There were lots to chew on, where he confirmed some long held suspicions and revealed some new ones.

The biggest surprise of the day was his interview with Mark Hamill, where he discusses Luke’s role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. For a long time, many of us have speculated that Luke would be a lost soul. A man who is determined to walk away from the Galaxy, no matter how bad things got. After all, it came from Han Solo himself in Star Wars: The Force Awakens when he described why Luke disappeared to Rey and Finn. What did come to a surprise is Mark Hamill’s revelation that Luke believed Ben Solo was the chosen one.

“[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character,” Hamill says. “And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that.

This comment by Mark is a big deal and gives us some clues, not only to Luke’s guilt and regret but Kylo Ren’s motivation as well. Once more we play this dangerous game, where people think they got the chosen one right only to be wrong and the Galaxy suffering for it. Not to mention the drive of Kylo Ren to be as good if not better than Darth Vader. With all this talk of the chosen one running in his head, it’s no wonder that this could be our very own Kanye West playing out in space.

The confirmations and corrections also came with Anthony’s reporting today, like how Supreme Leader Snoke will be all CG. The full-size puppet mentioned in past rumors was for set placement for the Actors and lighting. The “Caretakers” of Ahch-to also panned out with a rumor from a mysterious person on Instagram a couple of weeks back. The two pictured here, which bring back lots of memories for me back in Catholic school.

Then there were the Pretorian guards of Supreme Leader Snoke in a defensive posture along with confirmation that Finn, does join the battle on Crait. Another big reveal was the planet Cantonica where the Casino city of Canto Bight resides. There in that gorgeous prequel-esk looking building, you will see the Canto Bight Police Speeders, seen in a recent toy leak. A great catch by our good friend Jordan Maison.

The salvo from the great Antony Breznican today was drenching and fulfilling. We look forward to the coming days and lots more on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you guys have even a moment, I highly suggest reading all the stories from EW. The interviews and insight are incredible.
