Variety has just broken a major exclusive that actress Keri Russel may join the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX, directed by JJ Abrams. The role, mentioned by Variety has some exciting elements.

The role calls for action-heavy fight scenes and Russell has shown her ability to perform tough stunts in projects like FX’s “The Americans,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.”

The curious question is what sort of role will Keri be playing? With the loss of Carrie Fisher, could she be sliding in the slot as Rebellion leader? Or perhaps, like many would assume, she will be playing Rey’s mother, but slam on the breaks folks. We still got a year and a half, to wrestle with this casting and theories. As Star Wars: Episode IX is rumored to begin shooting shortly, the casing for this role looks, to have started not long ago as reported by Variety.

Abrams and Lucasfilm execs had been meeting with several actresses for the role for the past two months and settled on Russell right before the Fourth of July holiday.

This pick-up is excellent news for the franchise as Keri Russel is a fantastic actress and will do well in our galaxy, far, far away.
