With only a few shorts weeks left to this miserable 2016, some good news just turned up. Variety is reporting that the legendary John Williams will be back to score and record the music for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

“Williams concedes that he had hoped for greater commercial success for “The BFG,” which was deemed a box-office disappointment after its July 1 release. His next film, however, won’t be: He begins recording “Star Wars Episode VIII” in December and expects to record off and on through March or April 2017.”

This announcement is a welcomed surprise. There has always been a veil of uncertainty on whether the 84-year-old composer would retire before the next chapter of our saga. John Williams has spoken in the past of the love he has for “Rey’s Theme” which colored the soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. At one point saying with tongue and cheek that no matter who did the score for Star Wars: Episode VIII, he would handle Rey’s theme as his own. Well now, he gets the whole movie as his canvas.

Special thanks to the Star Wars Underworld for picking up the story.
