Late this afternoon during the quarterly earnings call Disney Chairman-CEO Bob Iger announced that a deal had been made with Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson to develop a new trilogy. Adding to this tremendous news was also the announcement of a new live-action Star Wars TV series that will showcase on the Disney streaming service in 2019.
Rian Johnson will write and direct this new trio of films with his longtime creative partner Ram Bergman. More details surrounding this trilogy was quickly supplemented by Andi Gutierrez, of the Emmy nominated “The Star Wars Show”.
“The new trilogy will be separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, and it will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy where Star Wars lore has never explored.”
There are scant details about the new live-action TV Star Wars series, that will undoubtedly be used to showcase Disney’s new streaming service. However, there is a chance that recent rumors of Lucasfilm Executive Producer Dave Filoni taking up this project may pan out. Dave was recently quoted at i09 about doing new things at Lucasfilm.
I also want to keep pushing myself into areas that are challenging and new. I’ve had a lot of experience now interacting with live-action directors like Rian Johnson who’s been really wonderful to me and showing me what their production is like.
I want to celebrate stories, and it doesn’t matter what medium it’s in. I don’t care — big screen, small screen — I just need space to tell a story. And do it as best I can. That’s my goal in the end. So we’ll have to see what form that takes in the future. …But let’s just put it this way. I learned from the best.”
This is a huge chunk of news to take in, and I am trying to heed Luke’s words here by just trying to breathe. A new anything with Rian Johnson is outstanding news and the prospect of an original trilogy outside of anything we have ever explored in Star Wars, is like 2013-2015 all over again. In those early years after the announcement of Star Wars episode seven, we clawed and gnashed at every scrap of info we could get our hands on. It was exciting, fun and exhausting all at the same time. This new venture into the unknown will be that and more, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
This new announcement for a new live-action TV series has me a tad apprehensive. I have always sided with the TV series of a franchise tends to dilute a brand. The Marvel universe instantly comes to mind. However *if this new project is headed by Dave Filoni and he has a real budget to make this happen, then I will happily send my apprehension into the Sarlacc pit.
This is an exciting time for Star Wars and sharing it with you all is going to be a great joy.
